Things That Are Happening
Nothing in particular here today, folks. Just some things that are happening out in the world that I thought you ought to know about in case you need to make small talk or you feel like posting something stupid on your friend’s Facebook wall.
First – Remember how Snoop Diggity Dog Dogg suddenly became Snoop Lion? What about that time Eddie Murphy became Eddie Lion? You may have thought his music career ended with Party All The Time , or Wookin’ Pa Nub…but then you find that Eddie Murphy teamed up with Snoop-a-loop for a totally listenable reggae tune.
Word on the street is that “lifelogging” is going to be the new thing. As if we’re not already totally immersed in ourselves via social media, lifelogging records everything you do, everywhere you go, everyone you see – everything. We’ve already seen Google Glass, but like everything these days, more people are jumping on the bandwagon. With apps like Saga, you can see definitive charts regarding your tendencies (ie. based on the bars you go to, you’re a “Hipster”). There’s also Memoto, a tiny camera that you wear to make absolutely sure you don’t miss the first time your baby laughs or that time your buddy passed out at the bar. It’s GPS enabled and automatically takes photos for you throughout your day and uploads them to the cloud. I can’t say I’m not intrigued, but I also can’t say I’m not totally terrified. When do you draw the line when there are apps to track your sleep, what you eat and how you exercise; apps that tell you what music to listen to and when you should listen to it, how to make your pictures look better than real life without having to learn anything about photography or color or composition? Check out this comprehensive list of all of the lifelogging services that are available to you right now. and tell me you don’t feel a little overwhelmed and like moving to a cottage in a remote village with (gasp!) no wi-fi.
This one has already been around a bunch, but still worth mentioning in light of techy talk. Is this the future of phones and maybe other technology as well? There has to come a point when we are all a bit more in control of these devices if they really are going to completely take over our heads and hearts, right?
And finally, Jimmy Fallon is the best person in the world.
Exhibit B) The Hashtag sketch with Justin Timberlake
and Exhibit D) Jimmy, the Roots and the cast of Sesame Street singing the Sesame Street theme song. Huff Post called it the “Happiest Thing Ever Filmed“.
