TED Talks 101
TED Talks: A nonprofit devoted to ”Ideas worth sharing.” It all began as Technology, Entertainment, and Design but has grown to encompass tons of other topics. The talks are usually about 20 minutes long, and almost always fascinating.
In case you haven’t been watching TED Talks, here are a few of my personal favorites (along with the rest of the world in a few cases!) to get you started:
Foie Gras is a controversial subject, and banned in California and Chicago, in fact. The treatment of ducks in order to eat this smooth, buttery pate is kind of hard to stomach. Dan Barber is a New York chef who practices “close-to-the-land cooking married to agriculture and stewardship of the earth” and he found a foie gras farm in Extremadura, Spain where ducks and geese would dream of living. The owner’s main purpose in life is to give the ducks what they want – and in turn, he lives almost a symbiotic life with them. It’s a really beautiful story and will make you think differently not only about foie gras but the entire way we eat today.
Whether or not you loved Eat, Pray, Love, you should watch this talk by Elizabeth Gilbert because she’s funny, she’s passionate about what she does and she tells the story of the origin of the word “genius.” If you’re not inspired by the end of this talk, you may never be.
Shawn Anchor, a positive psychologist, talks so fast that you might even miss some of the snarky jokes he makes. He believes that happiness inspires productivity and after watching this talk, you will believe whatever he believes. Hilarious.
This talk isn’t hilarious or beautiful as much as it is what every one of us in our 20s and 30s need to hear – 30 is not the new 20 and it’s not smart to put off planning your life.
So maybe you don’t have time to watch all of these videos while you’re at work today, but do yourself a favor and come back to this post later and then peruse the TED talks website - there are over 1400 talks in the library! Just cozy up with a plate of foie gras, harness your inner genius and happily and proactively take steps to planning your life.
Or just watch in your pjs.
