Summer, Please Don’t Go
It’s that time of year again. I’ve been enjoying long summer days on the beach whenever I can, but once the beginning of August hits, I always have this sudden pang of dread that it’ll all be over soon and I’ll spend the rest of the year waiting for it to be right now again. When you live in a place like Maine where summer is so intensely beautiful and fleeting, this is bound to happen.
I’m wondering if I should work on surrounding myself with summer all year – if maybe it’ll lessen the blow.
Maybe I’ll hang an oil painting by Samantha French that completely emulates the refreshing plunges I’ve taken in the Atlantic ocean somewhere where I’ll see it all the time.
Maybe I’ll wear some crazy beautiful sterling silver and 14k gold rings cast from real rockweed and inspired by Hawaiian coral. (Which happens to be made by an incredibly talented young woman who was a friend of mine in elementary school. Amber – if you are reading this, please know that the silver rockweed ring is on my very short list of things I am determined to own and saving to buy! I’m a big fan.)
I’ll indulge in some Maine perfume oil by MCMC…because I already bought it and I already wear it every day…even though I live in Maine. Is this overkill? I don’t care. How can you resist the smell of “a day spent on the island of North Haven off the coast of Maine, falling in love. Bulgarian rose absolute, local clary sage, wild Somalian myrhh, and French seaweed absolute convey the fresh scents of sea, air, sun, pine, and the discovery of a perfect beach plum rose. Dries down into the musky scent of sensual skin coupled with sun-dried grass”?!? There have been so many days when I have stood on a rocky beach in Maine and said ” I wish I could bottle this smell.” – MCMC went ahead and did it. (Thank you to Hannah for originally introducing me to this heaven in a bottle!)
And I suppose there’s nothing wrong with sipping a summery cocktail any other time of year either, right? This summer, I became acquainted with rose wine. (Bieler, if you want to get specific about it.) I thought pink wine was for jerks. I was really really wrong. Then I found out that it’s also delicious swizzle-sticked with some citrus vodka, fresh basil and some pomegranate lemonade. Yeah, swizzle-sticked.
Welcome to August, everyone! Start tucking away the summery stuff you love, even if it’s just in your memories, because these are the days we wish we could rewind to. Soak ‘em up.
